What Is Reiki?

Reiki is a Japanese system that has been utilized in the US since the 1930s, brought over by Hawayo Takata. Reiki essentially means universal vital life force. The specific system of Reiki makes it possible for a Reiki practitioner to become like a straw for the universal energy to flow through his/her energy system to the person who is receiving the Reiki. As the energy flows through the practitioner's hands s/he follows hand positions corresponding to the endocrine gland system, generally not touching or just touching the person lightly. Reiki is not visible to most people, although it can be captured on Kirlian photography which makes visible the electromagnetic energy in and around living things.

Just like certain atomic structures have an affinity and follow that affinity to reach an electrical balance, so Reiki flows and seeks its affinity to create balance and harmony in an individual's energy field. To understand exactly how Reiki works one needs to understand more about the human energy field, how the body and energy bodies interact, neurotransmitters and peptides. An understanding of the chakra system and endocrine system is very helpful as well. I won't be going into those topics and systems in this website so If you would like more information or have specific questions about these topics please email me and I will respond as quickly as possible.

What happens during a Reiki session?

Of course it varies from practitioner to practitioner. At my office, during your first visit you will give me some personal health history, I will describe Reiki and answer all your questions. Then we discuss objectives and expectations so that we are sure you and I are working toward the same goals.

You remain fully clothed, except for your shoes, and lie on the massage table with a sheet and/or light blanket to keep you warm while you are relaxing. Once you are comfortable, I begin placing my hands a few inches above the body in your energy field. As the energy flows through to you, you will likely feel or notice one or more sensations of relaxation, such as warmth, tingling, a letting go of tension, body pressure changing, a sense of an electrical flow through the body or seeing colors while your eyes are closed. Some people sense very little but may relax so much that they fall asleep. Most people experience REM movements with the eyes and random twitching that can be light or intense. The twitching is a physical response to the movement of sticky energy replaced by high vibrating energy and is considered a good sign. During the session you can talk with me and I will respond but most of the time I am silent so you can relax more deeply.

A session lasts about an hour. At the end of the session I discuss any findings, answer questions and may make suggestions about other natural health care. Generally I do NOT tell you what was “blocked” or otherwise out of balance so that you can simply move on with your healing process. Think of it this way, if you go for a walk in the woods and get a cut, do you go back to find out what tree cut you? Of course not! You take the next steps in healing the cut. This is how I approach supporting you with Reiki. I will tell you what has improved and how to keep it going! Reiki is not meant to replace medical diagnosis and/or treatment. It is imperative that if you suspect you have a medical condition you seek appropriate medical attention. Reiki is an excellent complement and support to any treatment; reducing stress before and/or after a surgical procedure to bring the person into homeostasis or balance where healing is done.

Some people ask if I teach Reiki and what my Reiki lineage is.  Yes, I teach Reiki, have been for 17 years.  There are three levels to Reiki and for class times and dates please check the Calendar.  You can download my Reiki lineage here:  images/reiki lineage.doc

A reiki session/treatment lasts about 1 hour and the fee is $100/session or 3 sessions for $240.
